As January rolls into February, business leaders are starting to focus on looming economic concerns and a handful of accounting compliance changes that could prove troublesome over the next few years.Recently, FloQast Co-founder and CEO Mike Whitmire joined The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants "Go Beyond Disruption" to discuss leadership, accounting changes in the new year, and how hiring the right people can mean the difference between sustained success and stagnancy.
"The future of accounting is in someone who understands guidance and all the rules, (with) the technical 'chops' and knowledge to APPLY that."
Additionally, Mike revealed his philosophy of hiring employees who are better than he is in a given position.
"The rule of thumb is you want to hire people to take work off your plate. Any time I was unloading work, the requirement is that the person needs to be better than me at that job. I never want to hire someone who is going to be a poor performer and not tell me what to do and give me advice. That mentality takes a lot of confidence — you need to be able to swallow your pride and hire people who are better than you...They're going to make the team better, make the company better, and ultimately, make me look like the best manager out there."
